The Wine Trails:

Black Walnut B&B is located directly on the Cayuga Wine Trail, which houses 15 wineries, 4 distilleries, a hard cider house, and many gourmet eateries.   All wineries are a short drive from the Black Walnut, and the popular Americana Winery & Crystal Lake Café is a short 5-minute walk away.   Check out www.cayugawinetrail.com for a description of each winery as well as local maps.  We are also 15 minutes away from the Seneca Wine Trail and its numerous wineries and lakeside restaurants; www.senecalakewine.com.   We would be happy to make reservations for you on the new “Water to Wine” boat tours (www.winotowine.com), featuring 2-hour and 4-hour scenic Cayuga Lake cruises with optional stops at numerous Cayuga Wine Trail wineries, as well as Happy Hour cruises.

Lakes, Waterfalls, and Forests:

Being in the heart of the Finger Lakes, Black Walnut B&B’s location offers you a great base from which to explore the numerous natural offerings of our area.   A commitment to preserving nature is mirrored in the many state parks and national forests you’ll find within just a few miles of our inn.

Taughannock Falls, with its incredible drop of 215 feet, is 3 miles away.   Taughannock Falls State Park offers hiking and nature trails, picnic areas, a beach along Cayuga Lake, and a fantastic summer concert series (www.taughannock.com) .  Other interesting waterfalls in and around Ithaca (11 miles) include Ithaca Falls, Buttermilk Falls & State Park, and Robert Treman State Park.   A short drive southwest will bring you to Watkins Glen State Park and Montour Falls.

Cayuga Lake, the longest of the eleven Finger Lakes, is only a mile from the Black Walnut.   A trip around the Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway offers plenty of places of beauty and natural wonder.   Taking a cruise is another great way to get close to the lake.  Sail the MV Columbia out of Ithaca by contacting Cayuga Lake Cruises (www.cayugalakecruises.com) or try Tiohero Tours (www.tioherotours.com) for 1-2 hour tours.  Kayaks can be rented by contacting Puddledockers Kayak Shop in Ithaca (www.puddleDockers.com).

Finger Lakes National Forest, and its many hiking trails with views of Seneca Lake, is only 7 miles from the inn.

Cool Villages and Small Cities:

The Black Walnut is located a short 2-mile drive from the shops and restaurants found along historic Main Street, Trumansburg (www.Trumansburgchamber.com).   Ithaca, the home of Cornell University and Ithaca College, is 15 minutes away utilizing the Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway (Highway 89).   Ithaca attractions include:

  • Ithaca Commons, a pedestrian mall that is the heart of the city’s vibrant social scene.
  • The Discovery Trail, which is a partnership of greater Ithaca’s top attractions, including the botanical gardens of Cornell Plantations, the Cayuga Nature Center, the fossil specimens at the amazing Museum of the Earth, the art collection at Cornell’s Johnson Museum, and the local artifacts at the History Center (www.discoverytrail.com).
  • The Ithaca Farmers Market, open April – December, featuring unique gifts, specialty foods, fine wines, beautiful flowers, and a dazzling array of jewelry, pottery, painting, and woodworking. A must see!    (www.Ithacamarket.com).
  • Live theatre at the Hangar (www.hangartheatre.org) and the Kitchen Theater (www.kitchentheatre.org).

It will be our pleasure at the Black Walnut to assist with restaurant recommendations and reservations, day-trip ideas, and directions to any of the numerous offerings found here in the heart of the Finger Lakes.
